01. Context & Business Problem

The Office of Health Care Assurance (OHCA) Facility Map is a public web application created for the State of Hawaii Department of Health. It provides an interactive geographical map and public directory for citizens to locate licensed care facilities, inspect compliance summaries, submit complaints, and review Hawaii Administrative Rules.

02. Scope, Role & Team Dynamics

Frontend Developer at Datahouse responsible for building the interactive map interface, facility search indexing, inspection report views, and multi-language support (i18n).

Team Scope & Structure

Agile squad of 5 engineers working with state government stakeholders, UI/UX designers, and backend API teams.

Personal Ownership

Designed and built the full client-side map interaction architecture; implemented debounced filtering across hundreds of licensed facilities; integrated TanStack Query for cache synchronization; engineered print-friendly inspection report views.

03. Technical Challenges & Constraints

  • Rendering hundreds of interactive geographical markers across multiple islands with smooth 60fps performance on mobile devices.
  • Multi-criteria filtering (care type, island, capacity, compliance status) requiring instantaneous UI updates without full page reloads.
  • Accessibility compliance for elderly citizens and family caregivers seeking urgent care facility information.

04. Architecture & Technical Decisions

  • Next.js App Router and Tailwind CSS for mobile-first, high-performance responsive layout.
  • TanStack Query for client-side request deduplication, optimistic UI updates, and intelligent background caching.
  • Custom client-side marker clustering to prevent DOM element explosion during map zoom operations.

05. Implementation Highlights

  • Built interactive map visualization displaying care facilities across all Hawaii islands with custom category pins.
  • Developed facility filtering, search index, and inspection report summary views.
  • Implemented responsive UI and external authentication workflows for certified healthcare providers.

06. Results & Operational Impact

  • Delivered an intuitive, interactive public portal replacing cumbersome paper-based and static tabular records.
  • Enabled Hawaii residents and families to verify licensed facility compliance and safety records transparently.

07. Engineering Lessons Learned

  • Debouncing map viewport boundaries and caching API responses locally reduces network requests by over 60% during active user exploration.
